FPGA Development is done using the manufactures IDE such as Vivado for Xilinx FPGA and Quartus Prime for Intel FPGAs using either Verilog or VHDL as the Hardware Description Language (HDL).
Once the netlist is described, synthesized, placed and routed it is sometime necessary to verify that what was described was actually implemented and that it functions as intended. This process is considered Verification and Validation and is generally required in the aviation industry for safety related operation of aircraft governed by standard DO-254.
They are extremely flexible. An FPGA can implement most any combination of logic functions and can be reconfigured in-situ and remotely allowing for rapid prototyping of your system.
They support tens of thousands of operations in parallel, as many as you can fit on the FPGA. This supports high-speed data processing and real-time processing
